Default Enough with the ageism already!

It's been my experience that on these forums and elsewhere, the minute someone makes a stupid, rude, (or god forbid, uninformed!) comment, everybody's favorite old trick to fall back on is the age card. As if the idiots out there are automatically underage. As if the transition to adulthood somehow makes a person more intelligent.

Stupid 12 year old noobs.

Stfu noob, you must be 12 years old or something.

Come back, when you're older, you noob 12 year old.

You know how it is...

Frankly, I find it downright offensive when people assume idiots to be underage. They should know better - idiots come in all shapes and sizes, not to mention ages. Just because someone has a few typos, loses their temper, or doesn't know every little detail about Guild Wars doesn't make them a minor. Assuming it does would certainly makes you an ass, however.

You know you've seen it happen. Feel free to toss up your opinions, observations, etc...

Haha, just burst into laughter when I realized that I'll probably end up with that epithet now... that's life for ya, though.

I think it is a fair assumption to make. Don't call me an ass but peopel tend to lose their temper a lot easiser when they are less than 20. I don't think you're necessarily stooped at that age, but def. more immature.

LOL and HUH???

people under 20 seem to lose their tempers a lot easier? oh I'm rolling in laughter. I work in service for a dealership, I used to work retail before that. I've seen more grown adults acting like immature idiots then I have ever seen some punk 12 year old act.

Anyway... online here though it does seem to be a common theme.

But to agree with the OP... there are some flaming and bashing going on that isn't called for. heaven forbid you forgot to use the search or just didn't find what you were looking for when you did. Or post a pic that some just don't seem to get and they bash you for it. And its not all from the 12 year olds

It's generalization and stereotype just like any other. see "Age Discrimination". Speaking from being in a hiring/firing position at my current job, you must be careful not to make or base judgements purely on someone's age (as well as many other factors, naturally).

I'm only 25 years old, I might add. Do people at work, who are older, have issues with me being in a supervisory/managerial role above them? Sure. Does that make it right? No.

All too often people associate maturity with age, but that is an assumption. I know immature 60 year olds, and I know mature 16 year olds. Maturity is in a person's character and their actions.

My advice to anyone that is younger, who doesn't want to be the target of this type of generalization: don't act immature, and most people won't even think to make age-derogatory remarks ... after all, this is the internet ... they can't see you or pull up a BIO that tells them how old you *REALLY* are

No person ever said that young people are less arrogant, tenasous, or huaghty than anyone else. They all are, even (or especially) the smallest little girls.

More immature? Not really. I have seen 50 year old men yelling "OMG PWNAGE" at 15 year olds on any given game. Less expirienced? Yes. Lack of expirience makes people less informed about the world around them, it makes them assume, be judgemental, even get an entirely inaccurate and/or superstitious view of life.

What comes with lack of expirience can make people very rude, stupid, jerkish, ect.

Other than that, there is little difference between adult and child. There are so many who can go their entire lives, and still have the mindsets they had when they were 14 and below.

Saying that there is is like saying there is a difference in intelligence between any man alive today, and those who were 4000 years ago. And any man saying so will be quickly shot down by, not only the existing writings of that period, but his own stupidity.

It's a fair assumption to make. And no I don't think all kids are immature....but to say that there's a few immature adults out there so therefore kids are just as mature as adults is pretty silly.

Kids are by definition immature. There are a few kids where I would completely trust over most adults in respect to their maturity, but in general, hell no. Yes there are some pretty immature adults but it's the exception rather than the rule.

As for the guy who said he worked in a dealership and said he's seen more adults act like immature idiots than 12 year olds...umm just how many 12 year olds are your actual customers? A 12 year old in that setting would have no reason to throw a tantrum while the adult, being the actual customer, will have plenty of opportunity to act like a jerk. Your anectdote didnt make a whole lot of sense.

If you are a young person who is actually mature, don't get defensive or offended by this. Instead you should be happy that you're way ahead of people your own age.

It seems strangely to me that 12 would the prime example of someone "immature"... what an odd number to label...

I don't mention an age, I mention kids. Take that for what it's worth. Immaturity is just that, someone being, acting like, or generally oozing an immature attitude in-game. Nevermind the forums, I'm usually a dick in here anyway.

Being 15 myself, I have often startled people when I join their ts/vent servers. In game, I was once called a stupid noob 12 year old, or something to that effect. Why was I called this? I told the guy I was 15. How this makes sense, only he will ever know. I suppose that really says something about how age doesn't affect maturity as much as some would like to think (although, in all fairness, I never did ask his age).

I have seen posts on various other forums before who's sole purpose was to defend the youths of Guild Wars. The irony came in the fact that many of these threads were clearly written by youths who hadn't quite grasped the inticacies of English, and they ended up proving the opposition's points while attempting to defend their own.

Even as a teeny tiny wee one I hardly ever freaked out and had tantrums, as many other children do (for example, mommy won't buy the action figure, therefore I must make a massive fuss!). I get flustered sometimes, as everyone does, but I don't make assumptions, accusations, or name-call.

Adults can indeed be immature. Here's a real life example of 2 adults who were too immature to take responsiblity for their obviously devious actions (although they didn't break any rules, they certainly did bend them).

A while back, my father's company was being purchased by another company. It was quite hectic, and for a while, my dad's bosses were in the New York office, so some of the executives (my dad included) had to go down to NYC for meetings every once in a while. 2 guys went down there one summer afternoon, and suddenly the power went out in the middle of the meeting. Yup, it was that big power outage that knocked out the whole east coast a few years ago. So what did these 2 executoves do to get home? No planes were running...trains apparently weren't an option either...they didn't have a car of their own...EURIKA! A Taxi! A few hours, and a few hundred dollars later, the executives arrived at home, safe and sound. Here's the kicker: they charged the cab ride to the company! I know that companies always pay for business travel, but that was a bit much.

Not really a fair comparison, I mean between you(C.B.) and the average 15 yr old, after all, you're Canadian.
ps: just a harmless jest for a laugh people, not trying to start a war, just proud of my homeland, and the way most of my fellow Canucks handle themsleves on the world stage.

Weew...*wipes off sweat* Good thing im 13.

This thead does have a point, 20% of the GW population judges people by their age, so it's always best to keep your age a secret while playing GW, and normally you won't be mistreated.

It's funny. On most forums for most games this issue comes up.

As much as I agree with you that not all twelve year olds are immature, the vast majority are.

The best way to combat this "ageism'' (agism?) is to act mature. If you're acting in a mature fashion and someone accuses you of an offense and starts being stupid, shouting "Stupid 12 year old!" or something like that, just ignore it.

There's little that can be done. When you're older, you'll understand.

I aggree with the majority of your points, however, i think that whilst it is unfair to assume that all morons and idiots are under the age of 20.

I do think that it is a fair comment to say ""stupid 12 yr old"" , Not because its true.... but more so because this is the way they are acting... be they 12, 20, or 75 everyone is capable of acting like a moronic child from time to time.

I see no problem with pointing out this rapid degeneration of mental age to such people.

Its our responsibility to maintain our community, admins acnnot be expected to be everywhere and do everything .... despite the rumour that Inde is omnipotent

By self moderating, and pointing out bad or childish behavour when we see it we mak this community a better place... as long as it doesnt turn into a flame war

There are plenty of 12-18 year old guild wars players that act in an extreemly mature way to other players.

Equally there are many 20+ players who act like blatent arse's.

It is a mix ... but the accusation of being a 12yr old ""Noob"" is not neccercerrilly an assumption of the persons real age... moreso a statement of fact about the way they are currently acting.

This is my opinion, everyone is of course entitled to there own

Ya whenever i get into a bashing fight with someone i useally guess the right age. Either they say " NO NOOB" I think 12-15 year old range. If the guy says " No your offer is not enough, sorry." I think 20+, maybe wrong but i got some ages right on just reading how they write.
